Porcelain veneers – what you need to know?

Porcelain veneers – what you need to know?

Veneers first became popularised by celebrities and were for some time too costly for the mainstream population. Today, modern dentistry offers the same celebrity smiles and confidence to everyone at more affordable rates. The procedureto have veneers fitted is less complex and requires much less time and expense than having a dental crown or orthodontics to correct discoloured, crooked, irregularly spaced or chipped teeth.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, similar in thickness to a contact lens. They are made from porcelain or a resin composite that adheres to the front of the tooth. Veneers change the shape, colour and size of a natural tooth.

Veneer versus dental crown for a perfect smile

When assessing the options for changing the appearance of a tooth or teeth, porcelain veneers and dental crowns are the two main dental choices. To fit a dental crown, dentists must do extensive shaping of the original tooth. In comparison, with porcelain veneers, dentists remove approximately half a millimetre of enamel from the front of the tooth, making this the more conservative and cost effective choice for creating a perfect smile.

The procedure to crown a tooth can involve the application of a temporary crown whereas the minimal amount of shaping done to prepare for a veneer means that the application of a temporary veneer is often not necessary. This lessens the amount of dentist visits required to fit veneers.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers, like dental crowns, have a durability of up to 15 years. The benefit of veneers is that the procedure is less invasive and expensive than dental crowns.

Painless procedure

The dental procedure for fitting veneers takes two or three visits. Initially, your needs are assessed and your options in veneer colour shade are discussed. The preparation of the tooth surface(s) is then initiated. Finally, the perfect veneer for your tooth is fitted. While there are “no prep” or “low prep” options that can see patients fitted with veneers in a single appointment, professionally perfect veneers often require 2 to 3 sessions following the initial dental consult.
